Essential railway upgrades completed between Staines and Windsor

VolkerRail, as part of the Southern Renewals Enterprise, recently completed a seven day blockade to replace 700m of track between Staines and Windsor & Eton Riverside.

The renewal involved 680 yards of CAT 11 & 114 yards of CAT 02 track, along with track renewals over the 174 year old Black Potts Railway Bridge, which crosses the River Thames, just a mile away from Windsor Castle.

Due to the lines sharp curves, which places additional stress on the line, over 500 lateral resistance plates were installed to bolster the strength and durability of the rail.

VolkerRail worked collaboratively with Network Rail to ensure several other elements of work were delivered during the blockade to maximise output

Paul Connor, VolkerRail’s Tonbridge depot lead, said: “The site was handed back fully welded and stressed at linespeed, without accident or incidents, which is testament to the planning, development and successful delivery of the scheme.”

Mark Goodall, Network Rail’s wessex route director, said: "This week-long closure has allowed us to carry out a complex re-railing job over Black Potts Railway Bridge, amongst a number of other important jobs and will ensure the continued safe and reliable running of services on the Windsor line for years to come.”
