Meet our people - early careers

There are many different roles available within the rail sector, and we are always looking for people with an appetite for exciting challenges. We want to nurture your ambitions and support your choices, as you choose a career path that is right for you. Still unsure? Why not hear from some of our people on their experiences, and how they are thriving in their roles.

Malaika Jamil

Engineering Apprentice

Choosing an apprenticeship over going to university was the best choice for Malaika, who is enjoying her time on the Hope Valley Railway Upgrade project.

Ewan Rudd

Apprentice environmental advisor

Ewan's interest in trains and the environment started from an early age, which made him the perfect fit for an environmental advisor apprenticeship.

Nienke Roberts

Assistant quantity surveyor

Returning to work after having her daughter, Nienke is now completing a degree apprenticeship in quantity surveying.

Ryan Nicolson

Crew manager OTM

Ryan started his journey as an apprentice. Ten years later, Ryan is now a crew manager and mentor to many of our new apprentices, and is responsible for operating one of our biggest machines – a Matisa tamper

Charlotte Fearn-Walker

Assistant project manager

Two years ago, we interviewed Charlotte, as she took her first steps in rail. Today, she's thriving, and leading works on major blockades.

Cloe Bott

Trainee maintainer operator

Cloe started her journey as an overhead line apprentice engineer, joining us when she was 18 years old. After learning more about rail and the different roles available, Cloe changed her career path, and now maintains and operates our tampers.

Vineet Bhamra

Project engineer

Vineet helps our team delivery signalling projects across Network Rail’s North West and Central region.

Ailsa Parkin

Apprentice H&S administrator

After realising that she no longer enjoyed college, Ailsa chose an administration apprenticeship so she could gain real life experience.

Ben Coldwell

Quantity surveyor

Ben joined as a graduate through our Commercial Academy. Thriving in his studies, Ben achieved a first-class degree in Quantity Surveying and is now a mentor to two students following in his footsteps.
