Health, safety and wellbeing
We want everyone to go home safe and healthy every day, and a positive safety culture improves working conditions on site and prevents work-related injury to our employees, subcontractors, and stakeholders.
Road risk
This area of priority allows us to increase the awareness of road risk and continue to reduce the number of road traffic accidents and associated harm to workers and others.
Our road risk lead is the deputy chair of Infrastructure Safety Leadership Group’s (ISLG) Road Risk Steering Group, which collaborates with the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB).
Workforce safety
We encourage our people to speak up and challenge any situation they see as a potential safety risk. This is built on a culture of trust and the knowledge that we need to work as a team to instill good safety performance.
Our close calls scheme gives employees and subcontractors the opportunity to address safety concerns before they cause harm or damage. Each year, we host our Close Call Awards to recognise those who have gone above and beyond to promote safety and continually encourage, identify and report safety concerns, helping us maintain a safe working environment for all.
Wellbeing
We have an open environment where colleagues feel safe to speak about mental health, and can benefit from talking to our mental health champions.
We also have occupational health nurses, providing face-to-face drop in clinics, questionnaires and telephone calls, to help with any medical problems people face; monitoring their health and wellbeing throughout. We also use fatigue management software to adjusting work patterns and rosters.
