Holy Trinity Night Shelter expands thanks to VolkerRail employees

The Holy Trinity Night Shelter in Bishops Stortford has received further help from members of VolkerRail’s Signalling division, to build a further two rooms, to allow more people to stay at the shelter.

VolkerRail supported the shelter last year, helping to rejuvenate the garden by completing major de-vegetation works, building a new patio, steps and raised flower beds, as well as restoring the garden’s fencing.

Eddie Lenton, senior project manager for VolkerRail’s Signalling division, reached out to the shelter earlier this year, to offer further support.

Holy Trinity Night Shelter provides winter refuge for local homeless people, as well as offering support to families who may be struggling. Since 2015, the shelter has been providing support from November to March, to help combat homelessness.

To help the shelter expand its facilities, the division helped create an additional two rooms to house more people over the winter period; a time when the weather is at its most bleakest.

Employees removed old built-in cupboards, built a dividing wall to create a dedicated sleeping space for overnight volunteers, and worked with a local flooring company, who had kindly donated flooring and carpets for the sleeping pods, along with the hallway and stairs. With the support of Techno Track, the division was also able to donate beds for the new rooms, along with additional supplies to help them through the winter months.

The shelter officially opened its new rooms on Wednesday 29 November, and thanked everyone for their help in supporting those who find themselves in need. The shelter also hopes the improvements will attract more volunteers.

Commenting, Eddie said: “The work completed will ensure the night shelter can accommodate and receive funding for two additional guests over the winter period. Having worked in the shelter during its drop-in sessions, I have witnessed the great work volunteers undertake, in terms of support in managing day-to-day needs, and assistance in obtaining long term housing.

“Thanks to everyone that took part this year. It really is a great cause, and something to be proud of supporting.”
