Investment in new plant

VolkerRail has invested in the latest steel mast manipulator technology to facilitate the installation of over 1,100 overhead line structures, for the North West Electrification Programme - phase 3 (NWEP3) project.

The heavy duty manipulators will work with our fleet of Colmar cranes to install new overhead line masts on site. With three dimensional rotation capability the manipulators have the capacity to safely grip, lift and position a number of different structures into place.

The new manipulators will also help increase output per possession, due to greater efficiency; in comparison to traditional slinging methods, reduce working at height requirements and lessen the number of operatives required in the crane exclusion zone; creating a safer environment.

Commenting on the investment, Mark Jackson, plant general manager said: “This is a really positive opportunity for the whole delivery team; being able to use a methodology that enhances efficiency as well as helping to improve our control over some key risks. This is a great example of the benefits of early contractor involvement, helping client, contractor and plant specialist become aligned to create benefit for all.”

This investment is the latest step in VolkerRail’s strategy to be the overhead line contractor of choice.

A further investment in 12 logistics kits, which include trailers and stillage frames, has also been made to ensure greater quantities of pre-assembled masts and structures can be delivered to site.
