Triumph at Rail Staff Awards
VolkerRail has again been successful at the Rail Staff Awards for receiving the Infrastructure or Plant Person or Team of the Year award for the second year running.
The award was presented to VolkerRail's On Track Machine operatives who undertook a project to promote positive intervention and control around those exposed to ballast dust, specifically silica dust.
The project, undertaken as part of the company's Supervisor Development Programme, has made significant developments in improving awareness of the health and safety issues brought by ballast dust on the railway network, which includes the lung disease silicosis; from long-term exposure, and the control measures needed to prevent it.
Seth Harrison, VolkerRail's HSQE manager, also received honours on the night, being highly commended in the Rail Safety Person of the Year award.
Ken Robinson, specialist businesses director, commented on the award: "Our employees are the heart of our company and their efforts and dedication are what make us the success we are today. This result is a great achievement and has been made extra special due to both receiving their accolades for the efforts they have made in making the railway safer."
The RailStaff Awards, which was held on October 7 at Coventry's Ricoh Arena, celebrates the achievements of the individuals and teams who work in the rail sector.
