Well done to VolkerRail’s Niall McCreanor, Stephen Morton, and Paul Martin, for completing the Three Peaks Challenge by Rail, and raising £2,366 for Railway Children.

The challenge, which is the only event to undertake the Three Peaks challenge by train, and is organised by Railway Children, saw the team begin their three day adventure in Crewe, before travelling to Wales to hike Mount Snowdon overnight.

The team then travelled to the Lake District to climb Scafell Pike, before the final leg of the challenge, which saw the team travel up to Fort William in Scotland, to finish the momentous challenge by climbing the UK's highest mountain - Ben Nevis.

Paul Martin, project engineer, said: “Taking part in this challenge was a wonderful experience - it has given me a great sense of achievement and the belief that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

“As a late stand in for an injured member of the team, I had relatively little time to prepare, and I had some tough moments both going up the mountains and coming back down, but, with the great support from the rest of the team, I managed to overcome them.

“Since the challenge, I now have a new drive to keep fit, and live a healthier lifestyle, which is great for me. If anyone is thinking of participating in a challenge like this, my advice would be to prepare in the right way and get plenty of training in, and make sure you have the right equipment for all weathers. Thank you for the great opportunity.”

Railway Children is one of VolkerRail’s main charity partners, and as part of its commitment of support, the company donated £5,000 in sponsorship, to cover the refreshments needed to keep all challengers energised throughout the event.

Railway Children’s events manager, Katie Mason, said: “The event was a brilliant success – thanks once again to our amazing supporters who rose to the challenge admirably! Teams from across the rail industry and beyond came together to tackle these three mountains and everyone did really well – tackling some tough climbs, braving some brutal weather conditions, raising an incredible amount of money and genuinely helping us change children’s lives with every step.

“We can’t thank everyone who took part enough for their generosity and determination, as well as Porterbrook and VolkerRail who made the event such a success by so kindly sponsoring it once again.”
