This next phase of essential work, to replace 22 kilometres of worn Supertram tracks, is split into five areas, mainly around Shalesmoor and Hillsborough. Work will start today (Good Friday, 19 April), and is due to finish by the end of August.

Area one work

  • Between Friday 19 and Monday 22 April, works will focus on Hillsborough Corner.
  • From Tuesday 23 April until Sunday 26 May, works will be focused on the section between Hillsborough and Hillsborough Park tram stops.
  • From Monday 27 May to Sunday 2 June, works are moving to the outbound rail on Middlewood Road adjacent to Dudley Road.

Tim Taylor, director of customer services at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) said: “These rail replacement works, a project started in 2013 and resumed last year, are essential to extend the lifespan of one of the best loved modes of transport in the region, which began operating 25 years ago. The new rail will give passengers a better Supertram experience - improving comfort and reducing noise in areas where tracks are currently worn.”

SYPTE will keep customers informed about the works, bus and traffic diversions via its website http://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/RailReplacement/ and posters at affected tram stops. Traffic management maps can also be found on our website.
