Level crossing and signalling renewals work at Eggington.JPG

North Staffordshire Renewals

We were awarded the works to upgrade Eggington's level crossing as part of the wider North Staffordshire Signalling Renewals scheme.

Eggington level crossing was an AHB type crossing which dated back to 1964 and, due to its age, required modernising.

We renewed all control equipment, installed a new REB unit and carried out renewals of the crossing, to cater for the increase in line speed to 75mph.

The remit included the introduction of bi-directional crossing controls and strike-in catering for a 40mph wrong direction line speed. Control of the crossing was transferred from Derby power signal box to Eggington signal box on the final commissioning.  The multi-disciplinary works included civil engineering, E&P, p-way, and signalling and telecoms.

Throughout the construction phase, the site was visited regularly by managers of both VolkerRail and Network Rail and has been held up as an example of best practice in site management. The project team have been commended for their proactive approach to safety by minimising hazards and continually improving the construction techniques to remove hazards at source.
