Learning and development
To help employees reach their full potential we have created an environment that promotes growth through personal development and formal training, at every level.
Our learning and development strategy aims to nurture and develop the potential in all of our people, so that we continue to develop a high performing, dependable and skilled workforce.
We know that learning happens all the time, not just in a classroom, and we encourage the use of the 70:20:10 model of learning across our business. That means a lot of emphasis on knowledge sharing, learning from peers and in-house experts, along with coaching and mentoring programmes, in addition to formal programmes
Formal courses
Along with year in industry placements and apprenticeship programmes, employees have access to an extensive learning management system, providing hundreds of different courses – eLearning and classroom based - centred around academic, soft skills and behavioural development.
Those wanting further education are offered learning through professional qualifications, industry competences, ILM qualification courses, or through one of our academies – commercial, project management, engineering, HSQES and rail operations.
Competency training
Site based operatives are given opportunities to develop and expand their skills, and are put on an array of competency courses funded by the company. This includes competence renewals.
We also provide recognised qualifications for our OLEC lineman, with the opportunity to develop up to OLEC level three. Training is provided by our highly skilled trainer and assessor, and practical activities are undertaken in our bespoke build training facility.
Industry leading
Over the years, we have been seen as 'best in class', receiving local, national and industry recognition.
Our learning and develop programmes are recognised as forward thinking, and are described as the ‘definition of excellence’ with ‘strong evidence of impact, clear links to business and HR strategies, and with an integrated and well-developed sustainability vision'.
