sheffield supertram getting renewed track

Second area of Supertram upgrades set to begin this April

VolkerRail is back in Sheffield to enhance and future proof the Supertram network, improving the service for the millions of people who use it every year.

This work is part of the second phase of Supertram investment for 2025 and follows the endorsement of the Supertram Business Plan at the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) Board in March, which saw a commitment to invest over £110m by 2027.

The essential works, which began in March, are split into six phases and will run until Sunday 31 August 2025.

Replacing worn out sections of track will ensure trams can continue to operate safely for years to come. The new rails will give passengers a better travel experience by improving comfort, reducing noise, and reducing the risk of unplanned closures on the network.

The impact of the planned works will be kept to a minimum and will only affect small sections of the network at a time, with works planned during school holidays to reduce the impact on passengers.

The majority of the Supertram network will be operating as normal throughout the works.

Latest track replacement works

This phase of work will run between Friday 18 April and Sunday 20 April, on Langsett Road near Hillsborough Interchange. Works willalso take place to repair the concrete track bed at Hillsborough and to replace a section of track on Middlewood Road, near Middlewood Park.

A SYMCA spokesperson said: “These works are part of SYMCA’s ongoing investment in Supertram. By scheduling works at times when the tram and bus network have lower passenger numbers, we hope to minimise any passenger and traffic disruption and keep people moving while this work progresses.

“By investing in the Supertram system, we’re increasing the longevity of the region’s tram network and ensuring the safe operation of this popular service for the millions of people who use it every year.”

VolkerRail’s project lead also commented: “VolkerRail’s longstanding relationship with the city of Sheffield will continue throughout this project. We have helped build and maintain the network for over 20 years, and our people are some of the industry’s best, so we are well equipment to help future proof this vital transportation system.

“Whilst we continue to enhance the network our teams will also work hard to ensure disruption is at a minimum, putting passengers needs first.”

Throughout the project, VolkerRail will continue to utilise the popular community engagement app for the construction industry – SitePodium.
